Hans Jacob Kunzler and Maria Elizabeth Barbara Kunzler

HUSBAND:
Hans Jacob KUNZLER. [How are we Related].
Born on 1 November 1819 at Saint Margrethen, Saint Gallen Canton, Switzerland; son of Hans Jacob KUNZLER and Anna Regina KASTLI.

He married Maria Elizabeth Barbara KUNZLER on 6 February 1844.

They were members of the Luthern Church.

On the night of 2 September 1881 his home burned to the ground. Not a thing was saved in the whole house and the family barely escaped with their lives. His daughters were nearly burned to death. The family separated; some with one sister to a neighbor's home and some with the other sister to another neighbor's home; doing all in their power to try to aid their daughters and sisters to recover. Their youngest sister (Bertha) died after three weeks of terrible suffering. During the night that the home burned, he said to his son John Paul, "Now John, it is settled. We go to America to Jacob and Babetta."

He and his son John Paul were both baptized members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in St. Gallen Canton, in the River Rhine in the early spring of 1882. Soon after, that same year, the aged parents, John and his sister Catherine, who was still very weak, left their beloved Switzerland and journeyed to Utah. Three of their children having died when grown and all within a few years before leaving. (One right before they left).

They arrived in Ogden, Utah in June 1882. They first went to Park Valley where his son Jacob had located. He left his trunks on a railroad car at (Kelton?) for two weeks, as he was so homesick he could not be comforted. So his wife, Maria Elizabeth and his son John and his daughter Babetta and Catherine all came south trying to locate a home where their aged parents (65 yrs) might be comforted. John's father chose his home in Willard, Utah, saying it reminded him of Switzerland more than any place he had yet seen.

He died on 12 December 1898 at Willard, Box Elder County, Utah; and was buried in Willard.
