ELOD Chief of Magyars
ELOD, Chief of the Magyars. [The Hungarians]
Son of Ügyek.
The Gesta Hungarorum ("The Deeds of the Hungarians") records that Ügyek is the father of Almos, while the Chronicon Pictum (the "Vienna Illuminated Chronicle") mentions that ELOD (the son of Ügyek) is the father of Almos. (S1).
The 14th-century Illuminated Chronicle says that Elod – himself the son of Ügyek – was Álmos's father. (S1).
According to Simon of Kéza's Gesta Hunnorum et Hungarorum, however, Elod was the father of Álmos and not his co-leader during the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin. (S1).
Elod was – according to chronicler Anonymus – one of the seven chieftains of the Magyars (Hungarians), who led the Hungarians to the Carpathian Basin in 895. Elod was the chieftain of the Hungarian tribe of the Nyék. The Nyék tribe occupied the region around Lake Balaton, mainly the areas what are known today as Zala and Somogy. Anonymous writes that the Hungarians westward migration from Dentumoger started in the year of Our Lord's incarnation 884 AD. (S1).
