Jonathan Burch and Marcy Rathbun

HUSBAND:
Jonathan BURCH. (BURCH-S5)(BURTCH-S?)(BIRCH-S8,S10).
Born about (1674-5-S7) (1686-S2) at Stonington, New London County, Connecticut; son of Jonathan BURCH or (Son of Jeremiah BIRCH-S4,S5,S7). [His birth is not recorded at Stonington, so it is difficult to determine his correct parents. These two, Jonathan and Jeremiah are brothers, both the sons of Thomas BURCH, and both were at Stonington, so the line will continue in any case with Thomas.]. He married Marcy RATHBUN on 22 August 1706 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut. (S6,S10). They were married by Nehemiah Palmer, J.P. (S6). Jonathan apparently moved later in life to Dutchess County, New York where his son and daughter lived. He probably also died there.

WIFE:
Marcy RATHBUN.
(Marcy-S5,S6)(Mercy-S3,S4,S8)(Mary-S7)(RATHBUN-S5,S4,S5,S6)(RATHBONE-S3,S7,S8) (RATHBURN).[Rathburn and Rathbone seems to have been used more by later generations].
Born (about 1685-S5)(24 NOV1687-S?)(24 JAN 1687-S?)(3 OCT 1688-S3,S4,S10) at (Newshoreham, Newport County, Rhode Island-S?)(Block Island, Newport, Rhode Island-S3,S4,S5)(Newport, Rhode Island-S10); daughter of John RATHBONE and Ann DODGE. (S3,S4,S7,S8,S10). She is also said to be the daughter of (Thomas RATHBUN and Mary DICKENS-S?). Both John and Thomas are sons of John RATHBUN, so the line will continue the same from there. As far as I can tell, John is the correct one]. She married Jonathan BURTCH (BIRCH-S8,S10) on 22 Aug 1706 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut. (S3,S4,S6,S10). They were married by Nehemiah Palmer, J.P.(S6). She married Thomas DODGE in Block Island, Washington, RI. (S3). [This is probably in error]. She died after 28 February 1767 in Stonington, New London, Connecticut. (S3).

CHILDREN of Jonathan BURTCH and Marcy RATHBUN:
  1. Jonathan BURTCH. Born 1 August 1707 at Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. (S6). He married 15 JAN 1735-6 Mary RATHBUN of Lyme, Connecticut (S6); probably a niece of his mother. They were married by by Rev George Beckwith of Lyme. Their first three children were born in Stonington, New London, Connecticut. He moved to Beekman, Dutchess County, New York by 1745. He was taxed at Beekman and Pawling until 1778. He was taxed 4 pounds in FEB 1746-47, 3 pounds in 1753, and 5 pounds in 1758 and 1760, 6 pounds in 1763, and 4 pounds in 1767 and 1770. In 1775, because of his Loyalist sympathies his farm of 450 acres in Pawling, Dutchess County, New York was confiscated. The farm was valued at 1000 pounds, and he petitioned the English Crown for payment on 16 MAR 1789. His petition was dated at "Fredsburgh", probably Friedrichstown, and was signed by Edmund Ferris, Daniel Hunt, and Mathew Paterson, Justice of the Peace. He was apparently in Islip Precinct in Suffolk County, New York at a 13 MAY 1775 meeting; and was listed among the heads of families in Islip in 1776 as a male above 50 years, with a female above 16 years. With William Burtch, he signed the Association in Islip in 1776. He was in Stephentown, New York by 20 APR 1789, when he gave a power of attorney to his son Charles Burtch. His daughter Jane Udall lived in Stephentown also. He probably died at Stephentown, New York.
  2. Jane BURTCH. Born 3 DEC 1708 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut. (S6).
  3. John BURTCH. Born 14 JUN 1711 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut. (S6). He married 23 JUN 1737 at Stonington, New London County, Connecticut Mary BESSY (BESSEY, BEASEY). (S6). They were married by Elder John Maxson of Westerly. (S6). He moved to Beekman, Dutchess County, New York where he was first taxed in 1747-48 and remained on the tax records until 1774. His tax assessments were 1 pound in FEB 1747-48 , in JUN 1748, in 1753, and in JUN 1758. He was assessed 3 pounds in JUN 1763, but 2 pounds in JUN 1767. The Livingston rent book has the notation, "John Burtch in lot 1, never leased." (27 DEC 1752 accounting). He was a blacksmith in Pawling. He died about 1773. His son John (who was also a blacksmith) was given administration of his estate on 2 APR 1773. Jehiel Beardsley was also on bond. Bartholomew and Francis Crannel were witnesses. He and his son John have been given credit for Revolutionary War service, but this death date makes that unlikely. There were other John Burtchs in Pawling.
  4. Zerviah BURTCH. Born 4 June 1713 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut. (S6). She married John NEWBERRY.
  5. Jeremiah BURTCH. Born 8 JUL 1715 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut. (S6). [Is he the Jeremiah that married Sarah BROMER 24 OCT 1742 in Stonington?].
  6. Marcy BURTCH. Born 18 AUG 1717 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut. (S6). She married Zachariah EDDY, son of Joshua EDDY of Providence, Rhode Island (see Eddy Family in America, p. 85). Zechariah was born 23 JUL 1720 in Swansea, Massachusetts, but moved to Salisbury, Connecticut where he had several land transactions. The first of their children were born in Salisbury, Connecticut and the rest in Johnstown, Rhode Island.
  7. David BURTCH. Born 23 JUN 1719 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut. (S6). He moved to Beekman, Dutchess County, New York and Pawling, Dutchess County, New York; where he was taxed from 1745 through 1778. His tax assessments were 3 pounds in 1746-47, 1 pound in FEB 1753 through JUN 1767, 2 pounds from JUN 1770 through 1775, and 1 pound in 1778-79.
  8. Joshua BURTCH. Born 11 NOV. 1721 at Stontingon, New London County, Connecticut. (S6). He married (1) Abigail UDALL, daughter of Lionel UDALL and Abigail BILL on 16 FEB 1747-8. He is said to have married (2) Lois. Some writers have confused him with Joshua Burtch, the son of John Burtch, which Joshua went to Beekman, Dutchess County, New York. He died possibly in Saratoga County, New York.
  9. Benjamin BURTCH. Born about 1723. [Source 6 does not give a birth in Stonington for a Benjamin as a son of Jonathan and Marcy. Jeremiah Burch and Margritt Billings had a son Benjamin born 15 Mar 1728. I presume this is the correct Benjamin, so I will not list him as a child of Jonathan and Marcy, except here for clarification.]. Benjamin married Anna UDALL 8 NOV 1750 at Stonington, New London, Connecticut. (S6). They were married by Rev Joseph Fish; Anna is the daughter of Lionel UDALL and Abigail BILL. Benjamin & Ana had son Benjamin born 4 Nov 1751 in Stonington. He was in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut about 1760. He then removed to Hartford, Vermont.
